Climate change is one of the most urgent and complex challenges of our time. From more frequent extreme and too-often tragic weather to unprecedented heat waves, the impacts of climate change are decisively and palpably global. Sports are no exception.Hockey traces its century-and-a-half roots to frozen freshwater ponds now threatened by environmental challenges, such as warming temperatures and the scarcity of freshwater bodies of water. The Seattle Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena recognize the urgency of mitigating climate change and how the platform of sports and live entertainment play a lead role in combating the climate crisis.

In celebration of April as Green Month, presented by Puget Sound Energy, the team and arena have doubled down on the theme, "small acts create big change". On an individual level, the climate crisis can seem daunting, but sports franchises, music artists, all forms of entertainers and their fans can find strength in numbers. Together, what we do each day can add up to a healthier planet. To encourage fans to embrace the sustainability mindset this Green Month - and keeping the momentum the other 11 months on the calendar - the team and arena will release two bingo cards full of "small acts." Fans can mark off bingo squares by completing sustainable activities at Kraken games, Climate Pledge Arena events, and at home to win various prizes. From taking the monorail to a game or concert to properly recycling your drink cans and turning off extra lights at home, any small act can lead to big change. Snap a photo completing each task until you have a complete bingo. Once completed, submit the card with your pictures to this link! You can enter each bingo card once.At the arena, there will be lots of opportunities for fans to interact with several Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena partners actively making measurable strides in sustainability. Some examples include:

  • 4/1: Waste Management will be on the concourse educating fans on how to recycle and compost properly using items fans will in and around the arena.
  • 4/3: Puget Sound Energy will host a Green Month Prize Wheel (Location: LL2, near the Modelo Cantina)
  • 4/6: Green Night, presented by Boeing, will feature a giveaway table educating fans on the Boeing Green Infrastructure Program. The program delivers an encouraging, actionable message: the aviation industry needs to work together to develop a infrastructure that allows for ability to produce hydrogen as fuel in vast quantities using only renewable energy, including solar and wind power.

To get a head start on Green Month, the team and arena staff paired up last weekend with partner Tegria for a community clean-up effort in the South Park neighborhood. In December of 2022, the South Park neighborhood was struck with King Tides flooding many homes and businesses along the Duwamish River.

As the world's largest and most sustainable arena in the world, the staff and leadership understand Climate Pledge Arena alone will not solve climate change. By including our partners, the community and fans during this Green Month and beyond, we can collectively inspire the sports and entertainment industry to do more for the global good.
