Green Sports Alliance Announces Ocean Conservancy as Lead Ocean Health Partner
Portland, OR | The Green Sports Alliance proudly announces that Ocean Conservancy has
become the Green Sports Alliance's first Lead Ocean Health Partner.
“From the beach to the mountains, and the gridiron to the fairway, the future of the sports we all
love depends on the health of our ocean” said Roger McClendon, Executive Director of Green
Sports Alliance. “The ocean is a critical driver of our climate system, and ocean degradation is
accelerating the devastating impacts of climate change everywhere. Whether we live on the
coast or not, we all depend on a healthy ocean. In fact, 50% of the oxygen we all need to
breathe comes from the ocean (1). For this reason, the Alliance wants to help make sure the
sports industry steps up to the challenge”.
As the world’s leading ocean conservation organization, Ocean Conservancy is committed to
understanding, protecting, and advocating for the ocean and all who depend on it. For over 50
years, Ocean Conservancy has advised governments, built coalitions, and engaged citizens to
implement evidence-based solutions to the ocean’s greatest challenges.
“Sports is one of the most powerful ways we can bring people together to face the challenges
that affect us all” said Jenna DiPaolo, Chief Brand and Communications Officer at Ocean
Conservancy. “Our ocean absorbs 25% of carbon emissions and 90% of the excess heat that is
warming our earth (2), so it’s one of the most powerful nature-based solutions we have. By
protecting our oceans we can and must take action against climate change, and few things have
the power to rally us together like our love for our favorite sports teams and athletes. Our
partnership with the Green Sports Alliance is a natural first step in our goal of bringing the sports
and entertainment world together around a common purpose - to protect where we play.”
A major new initiative designed to engage sports teams, leagues, venues, events and athletes
will be announced in the coming months. Green Sports Alliance members interested in finding
