EPA Releases Annual Environmental Assessment of MetLife Stadium

In June of 2009 MetLife Stadium signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, with the intention of improving the facility’s environmental sustainability and becoming a steward of green operation. The EPA recently released its annual assessment of the stadium’s progress toward that goal, and the data again shows significant environmental gains at the home of the New York Giants and New York Jets.The analysis shows that the total MTCO2e reduction under the Green MOU is currently at 238,325 tons and over $22.4 million in savings. This is equivalent to reducing CO2 emissions from burning 1,278 railcars worth of coal or a coal train stretching 19 miles long.These results were due to contributors and reductions, including the following:

• Increasing solid waste recycling by 11% from 1,485 tons to 1,648 tons
• Increased parking lots tailgating waste recycling from 33% to over 50%
• Increasing food donations to 5.5 tons
• Increasing food composting to 27% from 153 tons to 195 tons
• Increasing waste cooking oil recycling by 288% to 37.5 tons
• Increasing electronics recycling to over 1,700 lbs
