City of Phoenix Teams With Diamondbacks for Zero-Waste Spring Training Game

The spring training game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners on March 13 will challenge fans to create zero landfill waste while they take in the game at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. In a partnership between the Diamondbacks, the ballpark, the city of Phoenix and waste-management partner Republic Services, the game will provide an opportunity to promote the municipal sustainability initiative Reimagine Phoenix to the community. For the game, the stadium will remove every garbage can, replacing them with recycling and compost receptacles.

The partnership also includes collaboration with stadium concessionaire Ovations Food Services, which will utilize recyclable and compostable products and utensils to alleviate the creation of landfill waste. The event will also make use of volunteers from Grand Canyon University to help educate fans on the proper disposal of various items. “In only a few short months, we are already seeing the results of our recent meetings with the Green Sports Alliance and the Arizona Diamondbacks,” said city councilman Daniel T. Valenzuela about the Zero-Waste Game. “When there is a conscious effort focused on sustainability, we can have a tremendous impact on reducing what we pitch in the trash.“
