Detroit Lions Director of Facilities Named 2017 Facility Executive of the Year

Facility Executive magazine has announced that Fred Reddig, director of facilities for Ford Field, the home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions football team, has been selected as the magazine’s 2017 Facility Executive of the Year.

Now in its 15th year, this award recognizes an individual for outstanding performance in their work on particular projects as well as for the broader impact they are making for their organizations. Reddig and his recent work that is focused on sustainability and improved operations will be profiled in the February 2017 issue of Facility Executive.

“This award shines the spotlight on an outstanding member of the fast-paced, evolving facility management profession,” says Anne Cosgrove, Facility Executive Editor-in-Chief. “It is our honor to share the accomplishments of Fred Reddig with other members of the facility management profession. Since 2015, several projects headed by Fred have resulted in a nearly 20% reduction in electricity use at Ford Field. The upcoming article examines Fred’s approach to these projects that have helped to deliver the significant energy reductions.”

Working at Ford Field since 2014, Reddig’s projects at the stadium include LED lighting installations around the Detroit Lions playing field, throughout concourses, and in parking lots. Improvements to cooling towers and the chiller plant have contributed to two million gallons of water saved in 2016. And rather than replace the domed roof atop Ford Field, in 2016 Reddig decided to perform a restoration, preventing existing roof materials from going to landfill.

Atlanta Falcons’ Mercedes-Benz Stadium Is Going Green

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, future home of the National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United, is going green.

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy is taking notice, praising and recognizing the sustainability efforts of the stadium last week. In a push to achieve the LEED Platinum certification, the Atlanta Falcons are constructing their upcoming venue with the environment in mind and are on the path to have the first NFL and MLS stadium to earn that distinction.

“From inception, Arthur Blank challenged us to make Mercedes-Benz Stadium one of the most sustainable buildings in sports,” Mercedes-Benz Stadium general manager Scott Jenkins said in a statement, referring to the Falcons’ owner. “We’re proud to say that we are achieving our goal by implementing innovative solutions that will allow us to be the first professional sports stadium to achieve LEED Platinum status.”

The stadium will be the first of its kind to achieve all water credits available via LEED, but it does not stop there. A retractable roof and LED lighting throughout the stadium are among other environmentally valuable additions will also be on display.

AmericanAirlines Arena Enhances Fan Experience and Increases Energy Efficiency with Eaton’s Advanced LED Lighting and Controls System

SYRACUSE, N.Y. –Power management company Eaton today announced that AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami, Florida, home of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA®) Miami HEAT, is installing its advanced Ephesus sports lighting light-emitting diode (LED) and controls system. Featuring industry-leading control functions, the LED system enhances the viewing experience for spectators while reducing energy use by as much as 75 percent.

The Miami HEAT join the Minnesota Timberwolves this season as the first two NBA teams to install Eaton’s Ephesus sports lighting system in their arenas. The HEAT’s first game under the new lights will be tonight, October 11, when the team hosts the Brooklyn Nets in a preseason game. AmericanAirlines Arena joins a growing list of professional sports venues from all four major professional sports organizations to select the Ephesus lighting system.

“We rely heavily on lighting to set the stage for Miami HEAT games, creating the right environment for our players and our fans,” said Michael McCullough, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Miami HEAT. “Eaton’s Ephesus system allows us to introduce dramatic effects and color into our lighting presentations inside AmericanAirlines Arena, and we’re very excited about its unveiling this season.”
