PGA of America Releases First-Ever Social Responsibility Report

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – In its first-ever review of the long-term positive impact that Social Responsibility offers to the future of golf, the PGA of America has issued a comprehensive report—“The PGA and Its Members: Bringing Energy to the Game.”

The PGA recognizes the critical need to tell the story of the industry’s sustainability successes and challenges. With many young families and Millennials growing increasingly interested in companies that have a true social conscience, the report highlights success stories of how the PGA of America is achieving its strategic mission to “serve the Member and grow the game.” This is accomplished by reaching out to diverse audiences to expand participation; developing the workforce to reflect the demographics of our country; and ensuring environmental sustainability.

Developed with sustainability consultancy Environmental Resources Management (ERM), the report was spurred in part through a partnership with Constellation, the PGA’s Official Energy Provider and Sustainability Partner. The study is designed to attract future partnerships and talent that further the PGA and its mission, while showcasing best practices and case studies.

“Social responsibility is intrinsically linked to the success of the PGA of America and the entire golf industry,” said PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua. “Golf has many wide-reaching positive impacts—from the jobs created in local communities to green space and wildlife habitats that golf courses provide to the significant philanthropic contributions our industry delivers to worthy causes. Our future relies on how well we can expand these initiatives to new audiences, while injecting new energy into the services we provide to our PGA Professionals, in order to grow the game worldwide.”

In developing the report, ERM conducted a sustainability assessment with PGA Professionals and nearly 30 key industry stakeholders* that defined six key priority areas to develop a long-term vision and strategy for sustainability within the PGA including:

  • Fostering Diversity & Inclusion
  • Engaging the Next Generation
  • Educating the Workforce of Tomorrow
  • Enhancing Lives through Golf
  • Growing the Game around the Globe
  • Improving our Environmental Footprint

As well, the PGA has joined the Green Sports Alliance, which leverages the cultural and market influence of sports to promote healthy, sustainable communities where people live and play. The Alliance brings together venue operators, sports team executives and environmental scientists to exchange information about better practices and develop solutions to their environmental challenges that are cost-competitive and innovative. The information gathered is to gain a better understanding of how sporting events can be performed in an environmentally sensitive manner.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (January 17, 2018) – The PGA Forum Stage presented by OMEGA at the 65th PGA Merchandise Show will offer a full schedule of compelling speakers and diverse programming for thousands of attending PGA Professionals and industry leaders at the annual “MAJOR of Golf Business,” Jan. 24-26, in Orlando, Fla.

Presentations will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 24, with the event’s keynote program, “100th PGA Championship Celebration” – a panel discussion featuring past PGA Champions Davis Love III and John Daly who will share memorable moments from their major championship victories and announce the PGA’s plans for the upcoming 100th PGA Championship, Aug. 9-12, at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis. Additional first-day programming highlights include the Sirius XM Teachers Town Hall featuring Michael Breed, Hank Haney, David Leadbetter, Jim McLean and Larry Rinker, and programming on technology in golf, environmental initiatives and employment opportunities.

Days 2 and 3 presentations on the PGA Forum Stage, presented by OMEGA, cover a diverse array of topics including golf facility management, industry diversity, growth-of-the-game programs, employment, technology, teaching and a new live fashion show.

“The 2018 PGA Forum Stage presented by OMEGA covers a wide scope of meaningful presentations designed to inspire important dialogue that will help move forward the careers of our PGA Professionals, their businesses, the golf industry and growth of the game,” said PGA of America President Paul Levy. “It’s great to see so many industry leaders utilize this platform to connect with so many PGA Professionals, buyers and golf executives gathering in Orlando.”

Organized by the PGA of America, the PGA Forum Stage was introduced in 2007, to provide the game’s leaders with an unprecedented opportunity to reach the more than 40,000 attending international industry professionals on key matters that impact the business of golf. Those in attendance will roam nearly 10 miles of PGA Show aisles, featuring more than 1,000 exhibiting companies and brands displaying a wide range of products and services.

2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. Greening the Greens: Improving Golf’s Environmental Footprint – Panel discussion revolving around energy efficiency, environmental impact and best practices featuring various experts in the field. Guests include NFL personality and multi-golf course owner Ron Jaworski; Justin Zeulner, Executive Director of the Green Sports Alliance; Andrew Singer, Vice President of Retail Power at Constellation; and Honorary PGA President and current General Manager of TPC Sawgrass, Derek Sprague. The discussion is moderated by Matt Adams of Golf Channel and SiriusXM.

GEO Foundation

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona. (Nov, 28, 2017) – The 2017 Waste Management Phoenix Open achieved another first in golf sustainability, becoming the first tournament in the world to attain “GEO Certified® Tournament” status from Scotland-based GEO Foundation (GEO).

To become a “GEO Certified® Tournament” the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the largest attended tournament on the PGA Tour, followed principles set out in the newly released “Voluntary Sustainable Golf Tournament Standard” and achieved outstanding results in six categories: Planning, Site Protection, Procurement, Resource Management, Access and Equity, and Community Legacy. Sustainability highlights from the tournament include:

  • 100% landfill diversion through recycling, composting, donation, reuse and waste-to-energy.
  • 63.3 million gallons of water restored to the Colorado River Basin and Verde River through the Waste Management Phoenix Open Water Campaign with Bonneville Environmental Foundation.
  • 720 MtCO2e of carbon offsets with a strong socio-economic focus purchased, to cover more than double the emissions from tournament operations, player travel and volunteer travel.
  • Zero Waste Stations used to engage attendees, educating and encouraging involvement in sustainability.
  • An annual Waste Management Phoenix Open Sustainability Report with detailed metrics and program explanations.
  • A venue Environmental Management Plan and commitment to become a fully GEO Certified® golf facility.
  • Protection of ecologically sensitive areas and minimized impact of temporary structures and heavy machinery through a Site Protection Plan.
  • Over $10.1 million raised and awarded to local charities through The Thunderbirds and $100,000 donated to environmental organizations from Green Out Day.
  • Local youth engagement and free admission for local police, firefighters, active and retired military personnel.

The accolade is the culmination of many years of commitment, planning and delivery on the part of Waste Management, the tournament host The Thunderbirds and other tournament sponsors, stakeholders, and vendors to ensure a comprehensive sustainability effort covering all aspects of the tournament.  Sustainability efforts of the tournament have been validated through in-depth third-party verification, including the Council for Responsible Sport, UL and GEO.
