NBA Launches Wide Scale Community Efforts Ahead Of 2018 NBA All-Star Game

For basketball fans, the NBA All-Star Game means seeing top competitors in the sport go head-to-head in competition. Despite the level of play on the court, though, some of the most impactful moments of the 2018 NBA All-Star weekend will happen off of it.

Over the four days leading up to the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, 3,000 NBA volunteers will engage in community service activities in the Los Angeles area during over 30 outreach programs. The activities are wide reaching, ranging from hospital visits to food packing for the needy, but inclusivity is a central theme of the NBA’s 2018 endeavors.

Highlighted in this year’s community efforts is the NBA’s new platform, NBA Voices. Meant to address social injustice and bridge divides in communities, the platform will be used during All-Star weekend to facilitate conversations between youth, community leaders and law enforcement about challenges their communities face and how to build trust amongst each other. On Thursday, in partnership with Brotherhood Crusade–one of two Los Angeles based nonprofits selected to receive a donation of either $150,000 or $350,000 depending on the outcome of the All-Star Game–players will join in on the conversation on how to spark change and build trust.

Along with conversations, the NBA is using playing basketball as a conduit to facilitate bridge building between communities and law enforcement. In partnership with the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality–founded by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross–the NBA and Under Armour will bring members of the Boys & Girls Club of Metro LA together with Los Angeles Police Department officers to play basketball and in turn, learn leadership skills meant to spur candid dialogue as part of the Los Angeles Building Bridges Through Basketball program.

A notable inclusion in the NBA’s community programming during the 2018 NBA All-Star weekend is a focus on opportunities and inclusion for LGBTQ individuals. The Jr. NBA has partnered with Athlete Ally, an organization focused on ending homophobia and transphobia in sport, to host a Coaches Forum. Along with the Positive Coaching Alliance, A Call to Men and the Human Rights Campaign, the organizations will present education to 100 Los Angeles area coaches on how to develop young athletes and character. Main focuses of the program will be teamwork, diversity and inclusion.

A highlight for many fans during NBA All-Star weekend is the NBA Cares Special Olympics Unified Game. On Saturday fans will have the opportunity to watch 12 international Special Olympics athletes compete alongside NBA and WNBA players in a fast-paced engaging game fully involving everyone on the court.

USC Wins Pac-12 Zero Waste Competition

The Pac-12 Conference office announced Wednesday that USC was selected as the overall winner of the 2017 Football Zero Waste Competition.

For the competition, every Pac-12 university took part in diverting the most waste from the landfill at a predetermined football and men’s basketball game during the Fall 2017 season.

Sustainability advocates Bill Walton, Graham Oberly and Mike Carey selected the winners for the categories. Each school was evaluated on a summary scorecard detailing its efforts during the Zero Waste game.

Last October’s USC vs. Utah game was selected for evaluation. With a 90.96 percent gameday waste diversion rate, USC won first place.

Aside from choosing the overall winner, Pac-12 determined which institution utilized the most innovative methods to expand sustainability education efforts. Three other universities were also selected as winners for three subcategories, including fan engagement, most improved and student-athlete engagement.

During the Utah game, attendees were invited to engage in an interactive tailgate, giveaways, flash mobs, a live trumpet brigade and confetti cannons.

Recycle Man, a mascot who sported a green mask and an outfit bearing the recycling symbol, encouraged fans to partake in a bean bag toss. The toss had the attendees sort food waste and recyclables into the proper bins and educated attendees on sustainable habits.

Sacramento Kings and Golden 1 Center Recognized as Green Project Management’s “Project of the Year”

Today, the Sacramento Kings issued the following statement after Green Project Management (GPM), a global organization that works closely with the United Nations to advocate sustainability in all professions, recognized the team’s industry-leading efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainability within Golden 1 Center’s infrastructure. The Sacramento Kings and Golden 1 Center received the award for “Project of the Year” which is “bestowed upon an organization that demonstrates the impact and relevance of sustainability and project success from both a process and objective perspective” according to GPM.

“We are humbled to ​receive this international honor,” said Kings Owner and Chairman Vivek Ranadivé. “We believe businesses have a responsibility to serve as agents of change and we are proud that Golden 1 Center has been recognized as a model of sustainability.”

Green Project Management created the Sustainability Awards to highlight the successes of individuals and organizations from around the world through the implementation of innovative and one-of-a-kind sustainable practices. Earlier this year, Golden 1 Center and the Sacramento Kings earned international recognition as “Sport for Climate Action” by Beyond Sport. During the seventh annual Green Sports Alliance summit at Golden 1 Center, Kings Owner and Chairman Vivek Ranadivé presented his vision for sports teams to leverage technology to identify new, innovative solutions to fight climate change, calling for the sports industry and community to continue to set higher standards for action and environmental awareness around the world.

Golden 1 Center is the world’s first indoor arena to be 100% solar powered and achieve the US Green Building Council’s LEED Platinum status. An unmatched food program sources 90% of the venues ingredients within 150 miles of the arena, focusing on high-quality and providing healthy selection all while reducing the team’s carbon footprint by eliminating vehicle miles traveled. To close the food cycle, Golden 1 Center has partnered with a local food bank to distribute unserved food items through the community, and with a local, innovative organics program that develops fertilizers for the farms that serve the arena.
