Member Highlight: SHIFT Energy, Amalie Arena/Tampa Bay Lightning & Rogers Arena/Vancouver Canucks

Each month, our Membership Spotlight highlights the movement-advancing work of our esteemed members. For our October issue, we’ll be highlighting the great partnership work between  SHIFT Energy, Amalie Arena/Tampa Bay Lighting & Rogers Arena/Vancouver Canucks.

SHIFT Energy, a member of the Mariner Partners group of companies based in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, developed Energy Optimization Software (EOS) to make smart buildings smarter by optimizing automation.  EOS uses big data analytics, cloud computing and IoT resulting in improved comfort for building occupants, longer asset life, lower energy costs, better system autonomy and detection of defects for building owners and operators. SHIFT Energy offers solutions for venues and arenas, healthcare facilities, commercial buildings, airports and data-centres. SHIFT Energy has been a longtime partner of the Alliance, as one of the founding members of the Green Sports Alliance Corporate Members Network.

SHIFT Energy:

SHIFT Energy originally engaged the Vancouver Canucks in a marketing campaign to solicit innovative CFOs looking for solutions that both save energy and generate utility cost savings.  The Vancouver Canucks responded right away and handed us over to Al Hutchings and Michael Doyle.  The Rogers Arena was fully deployed and officially launched in June of 2014 and has been providing energy cost savings ever since.

Michael Doyle, as a Board Member of the Green Sports Alliance, introduced us to the Green Sports Alliance and SHIFT Energy is a founding member.  SHIFT has been engaged with several NHL arenas, but through the Green Sports Alliance, SHIFT met Darryl Benge, who was looking to bring an innovative sustainability technology home to Florida with him at the Amalie Arena.  In 2016, SHIFT deployed EOS and completed the deployment in September of 2016.

Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment, LLC (TBSE), which manages and operates Amalie Arena, has seen positive financial and environmental impacts since implementing Shift Energy’s Energy Optimization Software (EOS). EOS integrated easily with existing infrastructure and their event management software (eventbookings.com), allowing TBSE to simplify and enhance day-to- day operations while customizing the system to Tampa Bay’s unique exterior conditions. TBSE is reporting an energy cost reduction of 14%, a consumption reduction of nearly 1,500,000 kWh, and demand (kW) cost reduction of 15% and 1,100 tons CO 2 saved following the deployment of EOS. Across the spectrum, the EOS system outperformed payback expectations for the facility operators.

Recognized as the fourth busiest arena in the US, Amalie Arena not only hosts NHL games, but Arena Football League games featuring the Tampa Bay Storm, along with dozens of concerts and community events; nearly 150 events annually. TBSE continues to focus on sustainability for the 670,000 sq. ft. arena as it approaches its 21st anniversary and it turned to Shift Energy’s EOS to improve overall energy performance.

“The Shift EOS solution has materially reduced Amalie Arena’s energy consumption and improved operations by providing integration from our front office event booking right through to our building management,” said Darryl Benge, Executive Vice President and General Manager for the arena. “The EOS technology did what our team simply didn’t have time to do on a daily basis and it has performed exceptionally well for us.”


Rogers Arena/Vancouver Canucks

EOS™ began as a pilot project in June of 2013.  After six months of development and another three months of engineering implementation, EOS went live at Rogers Arena, with initial savings of 14 percent of total energy in the arena. The following years to now have allowed us to fine tune the system which has seen the savings grow to approximately 20 percent of total energy in the arena. Added benefits of the system include a live Dashboard that allows our Building Operators and Management to see energy consumption in real time.  This has become an invaluable tool for our Engineering Team.

“As a live events facility, Rogers Arena has a dynamic, complex footprint of energy usage,” Al Hutchings, Senior Director of Facility Operations and Engineering at Rogers Arena.  “EOS™ is able to fine-tune the entire facility from HVAC to chillers to lighting – optimizing the facility in real-time, while respecting our event management needs.  We feed the EOS™ solution with our event needs and the system takes care of the energy and space planning, continuously adjusting the equipment setpoints for optimal efficiency and performance.  The result is big savings without significant changes to our daily operations.

Seahawks Celebrate Sustainability Efforts at Sunday’s Game Against The Texans

The Seattle Seahawks and First & Goal Hospitality (FGH) will celebrate the ongoing sustainability efforts at CenturyLink Field during this Sunday’s game vs. the Houston Texans. CenturyLink Field continues to be one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable sports and entertainment facilities in the world.

The Seahawks and FGH have partnered with Cedar Grove Composting and Sound Sustainable Farms to focus on locally sourced, organic products that provide the highest quality food and beverage choices for Seahawks fans and support eco-friendly practices.

Cedar Grove creates compost from CenturyLink Field’s food waste, which Sound Sustainable Farms uses to grow produce to sell back to CenturyLink Field. This Sunday, all french fries served at the stadium, 6,000 pounds of cut potatoes, will come from Sound Sustainable Farms.Read

Local Companies Bring Sustainable Food and Beverage to CenturyLink Field

Kroger Field Awarded Prestigious LEED Silver Certification

Kroger Field, the home of the Kentucky football team, has been awarded LEED Silver certification for its environmental performance and sustainable design.

The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. Kroger Field is the first LEED-certified competition venue in the Southeastern Conference in any sport.

“In both the design and construction process, we were committed to transforming the long-time home of Kentucky football in a way that would be sustainable for years to come,” Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart said. “We are proud Kroger Field has joined exclusive company in becoming LEED-certified for exactly that reason and thankful for the work of our partners in the renovation.”

The University of Kentucky embarked on the ambitious renovation and expansion of Kroger Field – then known as Commonwealth Stadium – in 2013. UK worked with RossTarrant Architects and associate architect HNTB to create a new design for the facility that would completely transform the fan experience on game day.

The stadium reopened in 2015 after the completion of the $126 million renovation. As a result, today’s Kentucky football fans enjoy widened concourses, new restrooms, and a stadium packed with premium amenities including suites, clubs, loge seating, and private lounges. What isn’t as obvious to the average visitor is just how environmentally sustainable the new Kroger Field was designed to be.

“We knew from the beginning that sustainability was critical to the success of this project,” said Kevin Locke of RossTarrant Architects. “Achieving LEED Silver is a real testament to the university’s commitment to the environment. Knowing how well this stadium performs makes the experience they have created for Wildcat fans even more special.”

Kroger Field achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Sixty-seven percent of the old stadium was reused to create the new Kroger Field, minimizing construction waste and the need for the manufacturing and transportation of new materials. Low-flow water fixtures are saving approximately 204,000 gallons of water annually. Meanwhile, the stadium uses a third less energy than the typical stadium. The result is a savings of 694 metric tons less of greenhouse gasses every year—equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 75 homes.

“Kroger Field’s LEED Silver certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC. “LEED was created to make the world a better place and revolutionize the built environment by providing everyone with a healthy, green and high performing buildings. Kroger Field serves as a prime example of how the work of innovative building projects can use local solutions to make a global impact on the environment.”
