FIFA announced last week that, with the help of partners, it would cover the costs of offsetting the carbon footprint for soccer fans traveling to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup. FIFA has partnered with BP Target Neutral, a not-for-profit subsidiary of BP Plc that specializes in carbon management, for the initiative. The partners have created an online system for ticket holders to World Cup matches to sign up for the free FIFA offsets, and participants in the program will also have a chance to win two tickets to the World Cup final on July 13.
“FIFA and the Local Organizing Committee will offset 100 percent of their own operational emissions,” Federico Addiechi, head of FIFA Corporate Social Responsibility, said about the initiative, “and through the campaign launched today, we are encouraging fans to neutralize the carbon emissions resulting from their travel to Brazil.”
With Brazil hosting the World Cup across such vast expanses, the 2014 World Cup is expected to produce a record volume of carbon emissions for a legacy event. Estimates peg potential total emissions at 3.4 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, thanks to the distance between venues. Through this program, BP hopes to help FIFA offset the travel for at least 50,000 ticket holders in addition to all operational output.
